I always appreciated how Ray never over-promoted himself. His documentaries and educational programs were usually few and far between, but always a joy to watch, and he never lost his genuine nature or bothered himself with trying to look all "cool" and obnoxious like some do. Quiet, thoughtful, contemplative and joyous, and that all shines through in his shows.

The moment he laid down in the lee of the rocks it brought back every survival lesson I have ever had. So simple, get out of the wind...... some other moron will stand there cooling off and telling you how windy it is, not Ray.

Such a useful plant, the nettle. You can also: Make tea and soup from leaves Use seeds as food supplement Use roots as dye Use whole plant as mulch and plant food Detect nitrogen-rich soil by nettle presence Just leave it as a food source for wildlife - especially peacock butterfly caterpillars.

In rougher circumstances, you can make bread on a stick. Baking powder instead of yeast, slightly less water for a stickier (see what I did there) dough. Make it stick like a cap on the top of your stick (~2cm in diameter), and turn it over hot embers.

I missed you til now. Will start watching the videos you made. An option for the old reliable buck saw is available today. The wood that we cut for bushcraft work doesn’t need a large, heavy saw. We’re pretty much cutting something of arm thickness or less. Pruning is the type of cutting we do. A folding pruning saw is lighter, and is quicker to set to work. I use a Corona saw with a 10” blade. That will cut a log of 20” diameter. About 16” larger than needed. Coronavirus “hollow grinds” the ends of the teeth. The entire saw is just a support system for those teeth tips. All saws share that characteristic. The tips of the teeth are the sole reason for all the rest of the saw. I sought out the best teeth tips. And, there are several other brands out there too. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

Grey Owl was a sniper with the Black Watch in WW1. Perhaps he took to the woods to escape reality and forget the horrors of war. But he was a fake passing himself as a Native Person.

Modern day hammock rigging is so… modern, and expensive. Ray has a ring with tape through the hammock to gather it together and a single tape to tie it to the tree. Boom. Done. Makes so much more sense.

Instead of using the chemical industry's glue in the wild, you could (and should) have used resin as a natural glue. Would fit much better with the whole piece. Chemical glue and all unnatural products used for bushcraft (even when it's survival, where you need to make the best of what you have on hand and use whatever you can) always leave me with this bad aftertaste of cheating when I see things like this. But granted it would have worked without any glue, but it makes me wonder even more why you end up ruining it with industrial chemical products. I wouldn't pay for it if you sold it and admitted you used glue to make it last longer. Then I can just buy the whole thing from the manufacturers. They also make "natural" products.
